Kellie Brennan

Many people say they love their life. Many say, ‘live your life, and tell those in it you love them every day, because when you can’t tell them is when you realise you should have’.
Kellie Brennan is different. Kellie lives by these words.
In 2008, Kellie was living a ‘normal’ life.
After the upheaval of leaving her husband’s family farm at Moree in country NSW, she had re-established her life in the Hunter Valley.
Her gourmet catering business was growing at a rapid pace. She had made wonderful friends and her three children were happy. Her husband was taking to his stay at home dad role with gusto and they had overcome the recent heartbreak of a late-term miscarriage.
Then Kellie received a phone call that would change her life.
Her brother-in-law, Australian photojournalist Nigel Brennan had been kidnapped in Somalia.
Kellie set aside her own shock and informed her family that their life was about to become a headline on the 6 o’clock news.
Her ‘normal’ life – juggling motherhood, marriage and a business – took an extraordinary turn. She was about to become an international money launderer.
Together with her sister-in-law, Nicky, Kellie led their traumatised family through a nightmare, as Nigel desperately pleaded for his freedom while the Australian Government bluntly refused to facilitate a ransom deal.
For 462 days, Kellie pushed all of her own concerns aside as she fought to save Nigel by paying the price of his life, whatever the cost.
Throughout Nigel’s captivity, Kellie discovered she was a different person.
She was the person with the resolve and focus to save a life.
She was the voice of the Brennan family throughout the media maelstrom which descended on them after Nigel’s release.
She maintains that anyone else in the same situation would have done the same thing – could you?
Kellie’s story is a compelling exploration of love, as she looks back on moments that made her cry and laugh and reflects on how this experience made her the woman she is proud to be.
It is the story of a woman who found strength for an entire family as they endured the unimaginable.
It is the story of a woman who has emerged with a new mantra: ‘do it, without cause or reason, but because you can’.
Together with Nigel and Nicky, Kellie co-authored the Brennan family’s story, ‘The Price of Life’, which is available from 27 June 2011.
Kellie Brennan is a formally-trained agronomist, a self-taught cook and world traveller. She will also kill Nigel herself if he’s ever kidnapped again.
